A penumbral eclipse of the Moon occurred on Sunday 21 July, 1861 UT (9 Jul, 1861 Old Style), with maximum eclipse at 23:50 UT. In this extremely marginal eclipse, the Moon barely clipped the edge of the Earth's penumbral shadow. This caused a microscopic darkening of just 17% of the Moon's disc for 1 hour and 57 minutes, which was essentially impossible to see.

The penumbral eclipse lasted for 1 hour and 57 minutes. Maximum eclipse was at 23:50:30 UT.

During this eclipse the Moon was 5 days after perigee and 7 days before apogee. At maximum eclipse it was 0.532° in apparent diameter, which is around average.
