A total eclipse of the Moon occurred on 28 August, 2007 AD UT. The Moon was plunged into darkness for 1 hour and 30 minutes, in a deep total eclipse which saw the Moon 48% of its diameter inside the Earth's umbral shadow. The visual effect of this depends on the state of the Earth's atmosphere, but the Moon may have been stained a deep red colour for observers over the Americas, the Pacific, eastern Asia, and Australasia. The partial eclipse lasted for 3 hours and 32 minutes in total.
The timings of the phases of the eclipse are as follows:
|Penumbral eclipse began:||07:53:40 UT|
|Partial eclipse began:||08:51:16 UT|
|Total eclipse began:||09:52:21 UT|
|Maximum eclipse:||10:37:21 UT|
|Total eclipse ended:||11:22:22 UT|
|Partial eclipse ended:||12:23:28 UT|
|Penumbral eclipse ended:||13:20:57 UT|
This was the 40th eclipse in Saros series 128. The previous eclipse in this series is on 17 Aug, 1989 AD; the next is on 7 Sep, 2025 AD. The previous eclipse in the Triple Saros is on 26 Jul, 1953 AD; the next is on 29 Sep, 2061 AD.
This map shows the visibility of the eclipse at various stages. The bright area in the middle will see the whole eclipse; the coloured bands to the right will see the start of the eclipse, and those on the left will see the end. The orange band on the right will see the start of the total eclipse; the yellow band will see all of it, as will the cyan band on the left; and the blue band on the left will see its end. Note that the map is approximate, and if you are near the edge of the area of visibility, the moon will be very close to the horizon and may not be practically visible.
You can use the zoom controls to zoom in and out, and pan to see areas of interest. Hover your mouse over the tags to see what stage of the eclipse each circle represents. The green marker in the centre shows where the Moon will be directly overhead at maximum eclipse.
This map sourced from NASA's Eclipse Web Site shows the visibility of the eclipse.
