A total eclipse of the Moon occurred on 15 April, 2014 AD UT. The Moon was plunged into darkness for 1 hour and 18 minutes, in a deep total eclipse which saw the Moon 29% of its diameter inside the Earth's umbral shadow. The visual effect of this depends on the state of the Earth's atmosphere, but the Moon may have been stained a deep red colour for observers from the Americas. The partial eclipse lasted for 3 hours and 35 minutes in total.

You have not selected a timezone for eclipse timings,
so all times are shown in UT (essentially GMT).

The timings of the phases of the eclipse are as follows:

Penumbral eclipse began: 04:53:40 UT
Partial eclipse began: 05:58:19 UT
Total eclipse began: 07:06:46 UT
Maximum eclipse: 07:45:39 UT
Total eclipse ended: 08:24:34 UT
Partial eclipse ended: 09:33:02 UT
Penumbral eclipse ended: 10:37:33 UT

Saros Series

This was the 56th eclipse in Saros series 122. The previous eclipse in this series is on 4 Apr, 1996 AD; the next is on 25 Apr, 2032 AD. The previous eclipse in the Triple Saros is on 13 Mar, 1960 AD; the next is on 17 May, 2068 AD.

Interactive Map

This map shows the visibility of the eclipse at various stages. The bright area in the middle will see the whole eclipse; the coloured bands to the right will see the start of the eclipse, and those on the left will see the end. The orange band on the right will see the start of the total eclipse; the yellow band will see all of it, as will the cyan band on the left; and the blue band on the left will see its end. Note that the map is approximate, and if you are near the edge of the area of visibility, the moon will be very close to the horizon and may not be practically visible.

You can use the zoom controls to zoom in and out, and pan to see areas of interest. Hover your mouse over the tags to see what stage of the eclipse each circle represents. The green marker in the centre shows where the Moon will be directly overhead at maximum eclipse.
