Accuracy

Due to the erratic rotation of the Earth, the time and location of the eclipse cannot be forecast perfectly. This eclipse's time is estimated to be accurate ± 20m26s (with 95% confidence). This equates to an error in longitude of ± 5 degrees, or around ± 519 km (322 miles) at the latitude of greatest eclipse.

A total eclipse of the Moon occurred on 7 July, 0978 BC UT Old Style, with maximum eclipse at 12:26 UT. A dramatic total eclipse lasting 1 hour and 36 minutes plunged the full Moon into deep darkness, as it passed right through the centre of the Earth's umbral shadow. While the visual effect of a total eclipse is variable, the Moon may have been stained a deep orange or red colour at maximum eclipse. This was a great spectacle for everyone who saw it. The partial eclipse lasted for 3 hours and 30 minutes in total.
