Due to the erratic rotation of the Earth, the time and location of the eclipse cannot be forecast perfectly. This eclipse's time is estimated to be accurate ± 1h56m (with 95% confidence). A penumbral eclipse of the Moon occurred on 22 December, 1954 BC UT Old Style, with maximum eclipse at 21:25 UT. In a rare total penumbral eclipse, the entire Moon was partially shaded by the Earth (though none of it was in complete shadow), and the shading across the Moon should have been quite visible at maximum eclipse. The penumbral phase lasted for 4 hours and 34 minutes in all, though for most of it, the eclipse was extremely difficult or impossible to see.
