A penumbral eclipse of the Moon occurred on Friday 10 January, 1648 UT (31 Dec, 1647 Old Style), with maximum eclipse at 12:25 UT. In this extremely marginal eclipse, the Moon barely clipped the edge of the Earth's penumbral shadow. This caused a microscopic darkening of just 12% of the Moon's disc for 1 hour and 35 minutes, which was essentially impossible to see.

The penumbral eclipse lasted for 1 hour and 35 minutes. Maximum eclipse was at 12:25:23 UT.

During this eclipse the Moon was just 2 days before perigee, making it fairly large. At maximum eclipse it was 0.554° in apparent diameter, which is 4.3% larger than average. The statistics page has information on the ranges of the sizes of the Sun and Moon.
