A penumbral eclipse of the Moon occurred on Thursday 15 May, 1919 UT (2 May, 1919 Old Style), with maximum eclipse at 01:13 UT. This subtle penumbral eclipse may have been visible to a skilled observer at maximum eclipse. 91% of the Moon's disc was partially shaded by the Earth (none of it was in total shadow), which caused a gentle shadow gradient across its disc at maximum; the eclipse as a whole lasted 4 hours and 33 minutes.

During this eclipse the Moon was just a day past apogee, making it very small. At maximum eclipse it was 0.498° in apparent diameter, which is 6.2% smaller than average.
